I don't know if any of you folks are hunters or not, but my boy (16) got himself an 8 point buck yesterday. Of course, the downside is that he used my truck to do it. There's this long, straight hill as you drive into town. Although the speed limit is 50kph (30mph) most of the drivers run at about 80kph(50mph). It's a straight run of nothing until you get to the Apple Auto Glass at the top of the hill...that's where the cop was sittin'. Yep, got my boy on radar at 77kph just before impact. So my boy also got himself a $300.00 ticket. Poor kid...I think a written warning would have been enough. After all, he just got his license this week and whacked a deer with his Dad's truck...but the cop didn't see it that way. There were 4 other teenagers with him and nobody was hurt at all (thank God)...even the damage to my truck is minimal. The marker/signal lens was busted out and a small dent low on the body...no big deal. I went down to make sure the officer wasn't too hard on him because, honestly, at 77kph he would only be keeping up with the flow of traffic. The cop was pretty decent, though...ticket and all. What can ya do? My boy, my boy. My hair will be all white by the time this guy is on his own. Heh,heh.

At least this is one story he'll tell for the rest of his life. Thankfully no one got hurt except the deer. iF YOU EVER GO DEER HUNTING YOU KNOW WHO TO PUT AT THE STEERING WHEEL. dID HE GET TO KEEP THE DEER? Sorry for the caps. With that many friends it's good he was only going that speed and not blazing like most other teens. Plus I think this will only make him more cautious. It seems like he was driving like we all do which is 5 or 10 above the speed limit.

Do ya'll have the option of taking Defensive Driving there to wipe moving violation tickets off your driving record as we do in Texas?
Our son is turning 16 on September 25th. We bought him a truck for his birthday ...Chevy 1500 single cab. There are 3 reasons for this this truck: (1) most important, he can't have but 1, maybe 2, people riding in this truck, no backseat distractions; (2) he wanted a truck; (3) a 1/2 ton truck has more body/metal than some small/compact truck or car.
In Texas, teenagers must first take Driver's Education, then they have 3 months in which they can drive only with a licensed driver over 18 in the vehicle with them; this is followed by 3 months in which they can't have anyone under 18 in the vehicle with them (which eliminates joy riding around with friends in their own age bracket, or even brothers/sisters under 18); after this 6 months passes they have their full license and can drive with persons of any age. I really think this is a very good stair stepping drivers license system.
Glad to hear your son was not hurt, nor were any of his friends.
We have a great deal of deer everywhere out and around our property. When out there on weekends we can sit on our cabins front porch and they come to within less that 25 feet of us ... they are like rabbits, in that they are everywhere. They are getting to be a major problem in the small communities on the edge of town since they come right up in peoples yards and eat their shrubs and flowers (you can't shoot them in these communities); therefore, they continue to rapidly multiply and have become a real public nuisance and driving hazard.
There are always dead deer on the sides of our country roads that have been hit by vehicles; drivers are supposed to contact the highway department when they hit a deer, who then sends someone to pick them up to take them to our local zoo while the meat is fresh to feed the wild cats (lions, tigers, cougars, etc.); however, I know of those that sometimes sneak a fresh/accidental kill home when they hit one.

Good one Alex (put him at the wheel) ;D ;D I'm not a hunter, though. He could have kept it, but I don't want that mess around my yard or in my garage. I didn't see it but I'm doubtful much would be left of even a big one like it was. My truck wieghs 6000lbs + 50mph (almost) = big mess. He is a good driver and normally very cautious. That road is notorious for everyone running about 20mph about the posted...ironically, it's also notorious for deer crossing. He was shaken some and I think it will take some of his swagger out of his strut (so to speak).

I don't want to appear gruesome and it's always a shame when an animal dies this way, but it was absolutely a quick death. I'm doubtin' if the deer ever knew what happened...6,000lb truck + 50mph = a whole bunch of impact.
