I think that one of the most important factors in selling is listening. If we listen to what our potential clients want and to what they need we can figure out our best way to help them realize their visions and/or solve their problems. Admittedly, sometimes I can get "caught in the moment" and talk too much. What can I say? I'm workin' on it.

We've all heard the old one about the customer always being right. I disagree with that. ...in the literal sense anyway. Further to my thought about listening I think that we need to also control things. We need to advise in terms of appropriate products and patterns. I guess what I'm saying is, no matter how well informed clients think they are or even appear to be, if they're heading in the wrong direction it's for us to straighten them out. Chances are if we allow certain wrong decisions just because "the customer is always right" it will be all our fault when they're unhappy. If we use a pattern or color that just doesn't work we could be sorry for that too. After all it will be an example of our work. So I think that the customer is right provided they make the right decisions. Heh,heh. That sounds bad as it's written...it's meant to be a little funny...but I think there is a ring of truth to it as well.

If my customers are wrong I let them know it in a nice way and always remind them though that it is their home and they can do whatever they want. My job as a professional is to let them know the do's and dont's. This is our reputation and our profession on the line. If and when something goes wrong they can look back and say "Alex was right". Being brutally honest is what I am and it works for me and against me, but I have a clean concsience and sleep good at night and I don't worry who calls me and I answer all of my calls and return all of my calls if I'm busy at the time.

That's the way to be I think. Honest. Guide them if they start to go off track and be honest. ....I like it! Some of them won't take the gentle guidance and I've had to walk from one job in particular. It wasn't a design thing, it was a proper preparation thing and we all know what happens if we cut corners there. It's not worth it.
