I'm sure that you all have experienced these folks...I call 'em the "Savvy Customers". For the most part they're just tryin' to protect themselves so who can blame them for that? I find that there's some of them that are over the top though. Then, there's the ones that really burn me. With all of their questions answered they feel confident enough to tackle the job on their own and have wasted my time. I don't give away the trade secrets, so to speak, but throughout conversations with these folks they definately pick up some stuff. We talk about patterns and colors, sometimes prep...you know the drill. They have their questions all ready and we want them to trust us, so what do we do? Then they go out and buy some DIY stuff, use my color and pattern ideas and make a mess (usually). Oh ya just gotta love 'em!

Retribution is when they call you to say ...
"Do you remember me? I got a quote from you a while back; but, I decided it couldn't be that hard so I did it myself. Well, it has areas that are pealing/flaking up and others didn't color at all; in some spots the sealer has tiny bubbles and others where it has a whitish cast; some areas are still shiny but others don't look like they have any sealer it all ... can you come look at my surfaces and give me a bid to fix these problems?"
My response is usually ...
"Well, lets see, first my labor costs/fuel/materials have gone up so cost per foot will be about $1.00 more per sq.ft. than I quoted you previously. Then, of course there is the cost to strip and remove all the material you put on the concrete, being another $1.00 per sq.ft. I will have to inspect the current condition of the surface before confirming a new proposed price; doing so will cost you $200 (cash) covering my expert consultation fee which is refundable if you opt to have me proceed. I am not a "bank and trust" so before I start I will need a down payment of 50%; when I receive this deposit on the job, I will schedule the work (not until then)" ... telling them all this over the phone (not going to their location). If they agree to all these costs and terms, then you "have your retribution!"
