I don't know whose materials were used in the Virginia Wal-Mart. I was told by the contractor that saw it that the floor was stained/sealed/waxed (in lieu of integral colored and polished as is the one in your area); so I guess Wal-Mart is either trying different types of decorative concrete... or, I guess it is possible, that the contractor that told me about how bad this less than 6 month old Virginia Wal-Mart looks may not have known what he was looking at (maybe it is a poorly executed, integrally colored/polished floor). All the Wal-Marts in Waco (we have 3 super Wal-Marts here) are VCT tile floors (1 store is about 10 years old, 1 about 5, and the newest was built 2 years ago).
If they are not going to use high performance materials that will provide longevity and maintain even the bare minimum in appearance/public perception of the decorative concrete surface installed... that has the ability to withstand high traffic 24/7, 365 days a year in their stores... then I wish they would cease and desist doing so at all. It hurts us all when people see floors that look like hell, especially over a short period of time (the thousands that shop at a local Wal-Mart know when the store was built and how short of period of time it took the floors to be so worn out looking that they had become a neglected looking eyesore).

You're exactly right and although we know that the appearance is the result of inferior products and/or installation there would be no way to inform the general public of this. I still say that some sort of blanket awareness campaign is needed for this industry.
